Pigna: Where Time Stands Still in the Ligurian Alps

The Historic Old Town
North of Dolceacqua lies Pigna, the last major town in the valley. With around 800 inhabitants, the old town presents a fascinating maze of interwoven, mostly vaulted, dark alleys on a hillside. These alleys, known locally as "chibi" (from cupi = dark), form a unique labyrinth of medieval architecture. Everywhere you turn, you’ll discover fountains, old portals, winding alleys, and stairways that invite exploration.
Historical Significance
Pigna's strategic importance is evident in its history as a centuries-long outpost of the Piedmontese kings on the southern side of the Maritime Alps. Although there are few traces left of the former castle in the town center, climbing to Piazza Castello is well worth the effort for the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the neighboring village of Castel Vittorio.
Architectural Treasures
At Piazza XX Settembre, you’ll find two significant landmarks: the Loggia della Piazza Vecchia from the 15th century and the Church of San Michele. Built in 1450, the church impresses with its elaborate portal and a stunning rosette with colorful stained glass depicting the apostles. Inside the three-aisled interior, the large altarpiece adorned with gilded woodwork is particularly captivating. A true highlight is the collection of 36 vivid paintings by Renaissance artist Giovanni Canavesio, dating back to 1482, which depict Saint Michael, other saints, and scenes from the New Testament.
Thermal Springs and Modern Development
Another special feature of Pigna is the Madonna-Assunta healing spring, whose sulfur-rich water emerges at a constant temperature of 32°C. With the construction of the modern spa complex Antiche Terme di Pigna in 2000, the community continues a centuries-old bathing tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages.
Accommodation and Dining
The B&B La Casa Rosa stands out with its five tastefully furnished rooms in a lovingly restored old town house. For gourmets, the restaurant at the thermal spa is highly recommended. Renowned for its Ligurian country cuisine and extensive wine list, it offers a unique dining experience with a leafy terrace overlooking the scenic surroundings.
Getting There and Practical Information
Reaching Pigna is easy, with six daily bus connections to and from Ventimiglia via Dolceacqua. Its central location makes the town an ideal starting point for exploring the region.
The combination of medieval charm, cultural richness, and modern wellness offerings makes Pigna a unique travel destination off the beaten tourist path. Whether for a day trip or an extended stay, this historic town in the Ligurian Alps offers a rare blend of history, culture, and relaxation.
